I Quit!

That’s how I’ve been feeling when it comes to my running lately. Ever since the marathon, I’ve not been in a regular running routine. Of course, I know that I’m not supposed to go back full throttle right after one but I do think I’m supposed to be running a little more than I am.(Jason went for a 12 mile long run last week….) My normal running time has gotten interrupted lately by my 2 yr old that has decided not to go to sleep until really late most nights. My husband helps me out with her but can’t until he’s gotten our 6 yr old to bed. (Zach says he can’t go to sleep without his daddy lying beside him. 🙂 )

I guess things felt extra bad yesterday because I hadn’t been able to run since last Tuesday or Wednesday and I was feeling the grouchiness emerge. On top of that, I  was STARVING yesterday, all day!! It’s one thing to feel that way the day after a long run because I feel like I can pat myself on the back and say, “Eat up, you’ve earned it.” But when I’ve done nothing that day or the day before, it’s not a good feeling to feel like my stomach is a bottomless pit.  Last night, after Jason got Zach to sleep, I was still in bed with Zoe, who was still not asleep (but I had been). He told me he’d take over with her so I could get my run in. At that moment, I didn’t care if I ever ran another step. I was frustrated, not at Jason, not at Zoe…. I just was in general. In my best Eeyore impersonation, I declared, “I think I’m just going to give up on all of this. I think I’ll just see how much weight I can gain.”  Of course, about 10 minutes later I had my running clothes on and ran 4 miles of frustration off.

I didn’t really mean that I was going to give up and my new goal was to eat as much as possible. I think what I really meant was I’m scared to death that this whole running thing is suddenly going to stop one day and I will turn back into the person that I used to hate looking at in the mirror. Honestly, I can’t go down that road again….I won’t let myself. I think that’s why I start feeling like the wheels are coming off the wagon if my routine is thrown off.

What I’m saying is that I’m quitting at being a quitter. It’s silly for me to let a few days get me down and instead of bellyaching and moping, I’m going to do what I can when I can. This isn’t the first time I’ve felt this way but I wanted to share it with you this time. I wanted you to know (in case you didn’t already) that if you feel like this, you aren’t the only one and you can get back on track. Don’t let a few bad days ruin a good thing.

I’ve got a 5k race this weekend and then the next Saturday is the Crescent City Classic 10k. I haven’t trained as much as I have in the past for it but I know I can run 6 miles, I know it’ll be fun and I know if I skipped out on it I’d really be let down.

I feel much better today, btw. It’s a good thing I waited to blog about it now instead of doing it yesterday like I thought about doing.

Thanks for the reminder, Nike.

I’m going to do what I can, with what I have, with the time I’m given and I’m going to be grateful for it.  🙂

P.S. Don’t forget to enter my Train Like a Mother giveaway!

Respecting the Marathon

When I began running, completing the distance of a 5k was a huge milestone for me. (Some days it still is!) Never in a million years did I think that I would be preparing to run my first marathon in a little over a week.

What’s funny is that when I would bump into my non-running friends some of them would say, “So I hear you’re running marathons now?”.  My instant thought was, “I am??”. Of course, I knew what they meant  – “I see you posting constantly on Facebook about running so obviously you are one of those maniacs that run like Forrest Gump.” –  but I was quick to correct them. “No, no, no. I don’t run marathons. That’s 26.2 miles…nope, not me.”

~Insert nervous laugh here.~

So… here I am, counting the days down until March 4.

I’m still without the 26.2 under my belt but I have gone as far as 20 and it.was.ugly. I think I didn’t take in enough sodium or something because I was cramping like I’ve never cramped before. In fact, if it had been race day, I couldn’t have gone one step more. My body closed down shop and was finished. Of course, that is haunting me now and I’m desperately trying to figure out how to make sure that it doesn’t happen next weekend. *Btw, if you have any suggestions, please let me know!*

I have tons of respect for the runners that have gone before me: the fast, the slow, the walkers, the ones dressed up in a full mascot costumes. If you’ve done it, I tip my cap to you. What people don’t understand, and I’m talking about non-runners and runners that haven’t experienced long distance running, there is so much more involved in running super-long distances than just throwing on your shoes and going for a run. On my long run days, I start preparing the day before. I eat and drink a certain way and start preparing myself mentally. The day of my long run, it’s on my mind constantly. I practice in my head how far I will go and even imagine myself at the turn around. (I’ve run that trail so many times that I know where most turn around spots are for each distance.)  I pack my SPIBelt like I’m going on a little trip and wear a headlamp on my head. I make sure the older kids (who are watching the little ones) understand that I will be gone “x” amount of hours and I’ll either have something ready for everyone to eat for dinner or I’ll pick up something on the way home. I bring treats with me (Chocolate Zico coconut water, a banana &/or a Clif Bar) for when I finish my run so I can eat right away. And even if it wasn’t a great run, I leave with a feeling of calmness and accomplishment. It all sounds crazy when I’m typing it out…. and maybe I am a little but I love it!

I’m nervous, excited, worried, hopeful, scared, curious and really, really in awe that some folks can actually run these things in the amount of time I can run a half, lol.

My goal is simple: Just finish.

If I can finish with a smile on my face and that medal around my neck, I will be pleased.

If you have any advice or helpful tips, I’m all ears!! 🙂 Don’t forget to check out my GU giveaway that’s going on right now!!

SPIband Review and Giveaway!

Carry your cash, keys, ID, and credit cards.

You probably already know my love affair with SPIBelt. (Click here to read my review.) So, when Dawn at SPIBelt suggested I try their new SPIBand, I was more than excited to be able to! She even sent the black with bright pink colored one, which was icing on the cake!

Like the SPIBelt, the SPIBand is much roomier than it appears to be. It can hold your cash, keys and your ID/credit card. I even stuffed a bag of Chomps down in there, just to see if it would fit. I found it to be comfy, roomier than it looks, didn’t bounce and didn’t feel weird. It’s definitely the answer to what to do with your keys when you’re going for just a short run or going to the gym. A perfect spot to stick the bare minimals. They are sized in small, medium or large. (Larger ones can fit on your ankle!) The colors come in black, black/pink, black/turquoise, and reflective.

Here’s what SPIBelt says about their new product:

SPIband creates a more compact way to keep track of the tiniest belongings without interrupting a productive workout. With SPIband’s compact, yet roomy design, users can keep the smallest personal items around their ankle or wrist. With the safe and secure fit, users can work out without the worry of keeping up with their smallest, yet valuable belongings such as car keys, house keys, gym membership cards, cash and even wedding bands. (MSRP $9.95)

Once again, SPIBelt has lived up to their reputation of making great products! I love mine and can’t wait for one of my lucky readers to have one too!

Team Tough Chik

After an exciting year of moving up from “new runner” to  finding out who I am and who I’d like to be in the running world, I’m looking toward bigger and better endeavors in 2012.

I’m excited to announce that one of those new adventures is that I’m now officially on Team Tough Chik.

If the name Tough Chik sounds familiar, that’s because they also sell one of a kind running/cycling/triathlon clothes for ladies. I first started following them because I saw some of their shirts reviewed on a blog and thought how I’d love to have some of those super cute  (I mean tough 😉 ) looking running shirts. In the picture below, I’m wearing the “I Run” shirt and love it! It’s super cute and very comfy. I also love the Tough Chik logo on the back shoulder! The small print says “This is what tough looks like.” I’m still stalking their page and waiting for their Tough Chik ball cap to be back in stock!!

Team Tough Chik is made up of a group of more than 80 women from 5 different countries! We’re a mixture of running, cycling, swimming get-up-and-go’ers that have the honor of saying we’re the first team of this kind. We aren’t elites that had to follow a strict qualification to be a part of this team but I do think we all possess something special.

Here’s what Angela and Shannon of Tough Chik had to say about what their vision is for our team:

“Our mission is to encourage each other to get out there and have fun!  We see all team members as contributing members, whether you podium or persevere, all that matters is that you are out there doing what YOU love to do. A lot of teams out there focus their attention on attracting only elite athletes, but that’s just not what Tough Chik exclusively represents.  So we threw out the “rules” and decided to design a team for everyone.”

This is all new for me because I was never on the track team or any kind of sports team growing up. I love that we are all different in our abilities but we have the same thing in common which is the love of our sport and being active. We have a page on Facebook where we’ve all been getting to know each other and I’m telling you, I’m in the company of some awesome chicks!

We will be getting our race uniforms in March and I can’t wait! It’s going to be a blast to get to run and represent this group of tough ladies! I’m hoping that we might can even get a few of us together to participate in a race in my region (The South). Until then, I’m really enjoying the support and motivation that we’re getting from our daily posts.

Do you think that you’d like to be a part of Team Tough Chik?  If you would, you’re in luck! The sign up date has been extended until Saturday, January 7th! Click here to read more if you’re interested. If I can do it, so can you! 🙂

If you’d like to connect with Tough Chik and keep up with what’s new in their clothing line or read about what’s going on in their world, you can find them on their website here, Facebook and Twitter.

Happy New Year!  Make every day count!

Spotlight On: Rod Simmons

Rod Simmons

If you’re a runner or walker in Mississippi who makes the racing circuit, you’ve probably seen or at least heard of Rod’s Racers. It doesn’t take long to realize that if you need information or pictures of you or a loved one in a local race, Rod Simmons is the person to contact. The best thing about this is that it’s free for you!  A few months ago, I decided to spotlight runners or walkers from Mississippi that are making an impact in our running communities. The first person that came to my mind was Rod. He works hard to not only promote races but also the importance of being healthy and active. I also believe that through Rod’s Racers, he’s brought a sense of camaraderie among the racers.

We met up with Rod at the Run for the Roses 5k Race in Prentiss back in April of this year. He is an extremely nice person who has an obvious love for this sport that only a runner/walker could understand. When he found out about my blog and Facebook page, he’s promoted it regularly amongst his many followers. Rod was also my right hand man when I began planning my first 5k race as a race director. He also was more than ready to advertise it for me when we were ready to promote it.

Rod was nice enough to stop and snap a picture with Jason and me.

I really appreciate him taking the time out of his extremely busy schedule to answer a few questions to help you get to know him and about Rod’s Racers.

1.)Tell us about your family and work. I know April is at a lot of the races taking pictures and I’ve seen her race before too!

April & I have been married for 14 yrs. Our daughter Roslyn is 12. I’ve been nursing at the University Of Ms Medical Center since 1995.

Rod with his wife April and a fellow racer at an event.

2.)How did you get started in running?

I started running in 1990 as a Sophomore at East Flora High School in Flora, Ms. I ran the 2 Mile for the track team that went on to finish the season as state champs that year.

3.)When did you start race walking?

I started race walking in February 2009 after a 19 yr layoff from high school. My doctor gave me 3 months to chang my lifestyle after having repeat high cholesterol.

Rod is also on the Board of Directors for Bike Walk Mississippi. (Click to visit link.)

4.) Race walking looks so difficult! Do you find it to be harder than running?

Race walking can be difficult. You have to be disciplined to be a walker.

5.)What’s your favorite distance?

I love doing 8k or greater.

6.) Do you have a favorite race that you look forward to every year?

I enjoy Run 2 Eat 5k in Hattiesburg, YMCA Cotton Classic in Greenville & 300 Oaks Road Race 10k in Greenwood.

7.)What’s your best and worst racing experience?

Best – When I PR’d in Oct 2009 with a finish time of 32:50.

Worst – Sept 3, 2011. At 1/4 mile into the race, I hit the wall. All of my energy was gone but I still finished 4th overall in the walk.

8.) What’s an average training week for you?

A training week varies based on my work schedule and the weather.

9.) Do you do any cross-training?

I ride a mountain bike, stationary bike, elliptical machine, dumbbells, and strength training.

10.) What is Rod’s Racers and how/when did you decide to form this group?

Rod’s Racers was started a year ago. We promote road races in Mississippi. I want to help promote small races and support the race directors. We are made up of 5 people: My wife April does photos, Tim Irvine and Evelyn Watkins, from Meridian, cover East Mississippi, Frank Barrett, from Laurel, covers South Mississippi and takes photos. I am the founder and cover Central and North Mississippi.

Evelyn Watkins, Tim Irvine and Rod Simmons of Rod's Racer's

Frank Barrett of Rod's Racers

11.)How can runners, walkers or race directors connect with Rod’s Racers?

They can visit in 3 ways: www.rodsracers-ms.net, www.facebook.com/rodsracers and www.twitter.com/rodsracers

12.) What are your goals for Rod’s Racers?

My goal is to create a chapter in each state to promote road races in those states.

13.) Approximately how many races do you/Rod’s Racers attend a year?

30 plus.

14.)If you could give someone advice that’s just starting out running or walking, what would you tell them?

Always consult your doctor before starting out to be sure you’re healthy.

Rod and his team do an outstanding job!  Click the link on his logo below or give him a call if you need him at your next event or would like it promoted!

Nuun Review and Mini-Giveaway

If you’ve ever been dehydrated or even felt pretty close, it’s not a very good feeling. As a runner that lives in the Deep South (and profuse sweater), I’m always looking for something to help me stay hydrated.

For the longest time, I only drank water, which wasn’t a bad thing but I always wondered if I needed a little something extra. When I started going on my really long runs, I noticed that I was having over the top eye twitching and stomach pains after my runs, which was probably due to dehydration.

After hearing rave reviews about Nuun (pronounced “noon”) from the ladies at anothermotherrunner.com, we decided to pick a tube up (which contains 12 tablets) when we were at a running store in Jackson and give them a try.

Even before tasting them, I was really liking the fact that they were so “user friendly”.  A chronic user of  powdered water taste enhancers, it was nice to not have to struggle with tearing open a small package that may or may not open on the first tear and then making sure the powder didn’t spill on the side of the bottle, table or floor. (Yes, I can be that messy.) Nuun tablets, are just a little larger than a quarter and have an indention down the middle so they break into very easily. You simply drop them into your bottle of water and they quickly dissolve, basically like an Alka Seltzer.

Nuun sent me 4 tubes of flavors that I hadn’t tasted and I must say, I haven’t tried one yet that I didn’t like.

Here’s what the Nuun Web site says about their product:

What’s in Nuun?

-four essential electrolytes: sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, vitamin C and vitamin B2

-a nice, refreshing flavor to remind you to keep drinking

-a bit of fizzy stuff to ensure it dissolves quickly without having to mix or shake

-a smidgen of color in the form of riboflavin (vitamin b2) and beet juice depending on the flavor

-a sprinkling of love

What’s not in Nuun?

-no sugar: we didn’t want to upset your gut or overwhelm your taste buds and wanted to give you more control over your calorie intake.

-no scary things (like crazy doses of caffeine) so you can happily drink Nuun morning, day & night.

-no artificial colors – do you need neon green to hydrate? need we say more…?

Why no carbs?

the one-size-fits-all mentality doesn’t work in our active lives. we simply want to keep you hydrated… allowing you to focus on your gels, bars, bananas or cookies. Anyway, would you pick a sticky drink over a brownie if you had your choice?

How does Nuun help with hydration?

-Nuun’s special formulation of electrolytes helps increase the amount of water that’s absorbed into the blood stream. That means more of the water you drink is actually used to hydrate you instead of being eliminated because the electrolyte balance wasn’t right. Nuun is not energy. We designed Nuun just for hydration. It’s what we do best!

Will Nuun eliminate cramps?

-Not only are cramps painful enough to stop you in your tracks, they’re also completely involuntary. Good news is, yes, Nuun can help alleviate cramps by keeping you hydrated better than water alone. Each sip gives you a consistent mix of water and electrolytes to ensure you stay properly hydrated and cramp-free.

Diabetes and Nuun:

-Many athletes with type 1 diabetes prefer to use Nuun rather than sports drinks containing carbohydrates, because it gives them greater control over the amount of carbohydrate they consume.

T1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder of the pancreas that halts the body’s natural production of the hormone insulin. All athletes need to fuel with carbohydrates while training, but those with diabetes often need to have precise information about how many carbs they consume so they can measure their insulin dose accordingly.

It is difficult to know just how many grams of carbohydrate are in a “gulp” of sports drink. The carb content of solid foods or sports supplements such as gels, blocks, etc., is much easier to gauge. That’s why so many diabetic athletes choose Nuun for fluid and electrolyte replenishment and leave carb replacement to solid foods.

Environmentally friendly:

There are no plastic bottles. Every recyclable Nuun tube is equivalent to 12 bottles.

Is Nuun gluten-free?

Yes, both Nuun and U Natural Hydration are gluten-free so it’s safe for those with celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Drink up, friends.

Is Nuun vegetarian?

Nuun and U Natural Hydration contain no animal derived raw materials. They are enjoyed by vegetarians, omnivores and carnivores alike.

Is Nuun carbonated?

A burping athlete is not a good thing, so no, Nuun is not carbonated. When first dropped into water Nuun fizzes to dissolve, but once it’s finished dissolving it will very quickly become still.

Is Nuun legal to race with?

Many are surprised with their increased performance when drinking Nuun, but no worries, Nuun is totally legal. The only thing Nuun is laced with is sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium.

Can my kids drink Nuun?

Sure, Nuun’s great for hydrating and it’s a great way to get kids to drink more water (instead of sugary sodas!).

Under 8 calories!!”

With that being said, I can tell you that I have had my better (faster) runs after drinking Nuun in my water. I feel like I can breathe better and don’t fatigue as easily. I also drink it after my run and even when I’ve been sick and felt like I needed extra hydration.

Nuun has a very light flavor to it that you might have to taste a few times to get used to. It doesn’t taste bad at all, just not as heavily flavored as other drinks.

My favorites are Lemon-Lime, Strawberry Lemonade and Fruit Punch but they have a much larger selection to choose from.

Nuun's flavor choices.

Our collection of Nuun

Our personal collection of Nuun.

My brother recently started trying to run some and I gave him a few Nuun tablets to try. After trying the ones I gave him, he liked them so much that he bought his own. I asked him to write a short review of what his experience has been after using them:

“I am now officially a believer in Nuun. A couple weeks ago, my sister, Gina gave me 4 or 5 tablets to try. I wanted to spread them out on random days so that I could be sure that the effects, or lack of effect of the Nuun,  wasn’t psychological and also was not attributed to a good day or a bad day in the gym. The first one that I tried I felt more energy in the gym and I had a better run on the treadmill. The next time I tried something different when I went, and I did not have the same results. Overall, in my experiment with Nuun, each time I used a Nuun tablet before going to the gym, I experienced more energy throughout my whole workout. Also, it seems that each time I used the Nuun, I was able to breathe easier as I was running. I am new at running, and I am currently training for my first 5k race this fall. Each time I used Nuun before I ran, whether its increased energy that does it, whether it really somehow gives me more oxygen, or whether it is psychological, I find that I get less winded when I run. As of yesterday, I purchased two bottles of Nuun to continue my experimentation. One more thing I should add, the flavors I have tried so far taste really good and give the water a clean crisp taste.

I just wish they were easier to come by, the closest store that sells them is 2 hours away.”

Because I like Nuun so much, I decided to give away a tube to one lucky reader!

Almost there…..

Well, it’s finally in sight!

After months of planning, worrying, ordering things, making a million phone calls and losing a lot of sleep, the race is tomorrow morning. If you haven’t been following my numerous posts on Facebook, no this is not a race that I’ll be racing in. This is my first race that I’ve directed. To say that it’s been a little difficult and quite the learning experience, would be a huge understatement. I am glad that I did it though.  (Hopefully by this time tomorrow I’ll still be glad I did it!)

Over a year and a half ago, I never dreamed that I’d run at all, let alone a 5k, 10k, half, etc. So, obviously the idea of me ever directing a race was not even on the radar…not even after I started running!

The main thing I’ve done to try to make this a race that people will enjoy has been to ask myself what are the things I’ve liked about races or didn’t like. This advice was given to me by Rod Simmons and my husband, Jason. They are both experienced racers and it does make sense, after all.

I didn’t like the couple of races that we went to that had only water and limited/no fruit or the one that we attended that didn’t even have prizes for the winners. I guess it was the feeling we got when we left that we’d basically paid a huge registration fee and ran for…nothing.

Anyway, there were other races that had great refreshments, like smoothies and that was something that is a huge plus in my book. So, one of the first things on my list when I was looking for sponsors was to call our local Smoothie King. They were gracious enough to agree to provide smoothies and I am more than excited to have them at our race! We always love goodies in our race bags, so I’ve managed to get a few of those to stuff in there. Plus, we have door prizes to giveaway too, which is always fun. We decided to go with medals for our winners instead of trophies but I think they look great and hope the racers think the same.

Well, I only have a few more things to do today before the preparations are done and all we have left to do is wake up in the morning and set everything up. (Kind of reminds me of Christmas.)

With that being said, I should stop blogging and get those last things “wrapped up”.

I hope you’ll be able to come, if you can and if you can’t, say a little prayer that things go smoothly for everyone – racers included.

I want this to be a race that will be on everyone’s “To Do Again” list!  🙂

Hitting the Wall…then pushing through it

Have you ever had so much going on in your life at one time that you almost felt paralyzed from it all?  Yes?

Me too…

In these last several weeks, I’ve hit the Wall and it wasn’t just while I was running. I’ve had so much going on with family and other obligations that I was to the point of feeling completely incapacitated. A lot of this comes from having a really hard problem saying two words more often – “No” and “Help”.

Summertime busyness, birthdays to shop, clean and cook for, rearranging a bedroom (the day before a double bday party), normal household duties, a wedding to be in, planning a race, finding a time to run (and deal with the extreme heat), back to school shopping, and all of the rest of things that being Mama involves has had my head spinning! Not that women all over the world don’t have that much and more to do everyday but I can say with no doubt that my plate hasn’t been just full…it’s been overflowing.  At one point, I was having nights that I couldn’t fall asleep, even though I was exhausted because my mind was racing. When I did fall asleep, I’d wake up sweating with my heart pounding as if I’d been running speed drills and eyes wide open. Thoughts of race medals, matron of honor dresses and shoes, where can I order that Caillou toy, race time clocks, Barney birthday decorations, making birthday cakes, school clothes, cleaning the house, typing up registration forms to put online and did I leave a candle lit in the living room were going through my head so fast that I wondered if I was truly going crazy. There was a day or two that all I wanted to do was drop my kids off at their grandparent’s, turn off my phone and computer, go in my bedroom and just hide. (I never did that but boy did it sound good at the time! )

Thankfully, I’m not and never was alone in all of this. I have God, my family and I have friends and that’s how I’ve gotten through these last few crazy weeks. A sermon at church about worry came at a perfect time for me and made me realize that I had let my anxiety not only get out of control but control me. I made a decision to stop so being stressed to the point of doing nothing because I didn’t know where to begin and start moving forward.

So, what did I do once I decided having a mini breakdown wasn’t an option? First, I prayed and apologized to God for trying to do everything myself.  I also acknowledged that I need to have a little more faith and a little less freaking out going on in my life. Then I did something that I don’t always do….I asked for help and accepted help when it was offered. For example, I called my friend, who is great cake decorator, and asked if she could come over and help me decorate the 2 cakes I had looming over me to bake. As the time got closer and I still had tons to do, she insisted on just making them herself and bringing them to me on the day of the party to make things easier. Although it was very hard to accept this extremely huge gesture, I finally realized that she was right and gratefully accepted.

I started prioritizing and making lists (which isn’t a bad thing to do anyway) and deciding on what had to be done now, in a day or two, week or so, etc. Which explains the lack of a blog lately. Slowly but surely, things have been coming together, getting done and being marked off of my to-do list. I’m now finally feeling like things are getting slowly back to the normal busy around here instead of nightmare busy.

Crying helps. Well, at least it does for me sometimes. Not because it solves any problems but sometimes it really helps me get all of my emotions/frustrations out and focused again. There was a day or two that I scrunched up in blanket on the recliner and just cried. I can nearly guarantee that after one “good” cry, the next day I come back stronger and more focused than ever. It may be just a girl thing but sometimes it just has to be done (if you can’t get a long run in). I’ve also made sure that I didn’t stop finding a time to go run. Running is a huge stress reliever for me and I knew that it needed to be done even if I thought I was too tired to go. The great thing is that lately, because I’ve been having to go nearly all the time at night, I’ve picked up a new running buddy – Jason! 🙂 ( Our older kids keep the baby monitor with them and listen for Zach and Zoe for us.) Instead of running those boring loops at the track, we’ve been running all over Seminary. It’s been so nice to get to run and talk to each other -almost like a date!- and it’s also been neat to see the town from a different view. I took my son, Tyler last night with me and proudly gave him the tour of the town as we chatted the whole time. At first I felt like my circumstances were forcing me into running at a certain time but now, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. 🙂

Don’t get me wrong. All of these things that I’ve been doing and currently doing are all things I want to do because they involve, in one way or the other, people I care about. The trouble I have is when it all seems to happen at once or so close that it seems like it’s all at one time. I’m not the most organized person you’ve ever met either.  The first step is to admit it, right? 🙂

My big focus on my list right now is the Race for Grace 5k, planning another birthday (but at least it will be at a laser tag place), and starting my half marathon training. I’m also hoping to do a product review soon, a race report from the Watermelon 5k (Yes, the one in July…) and I’m going to feature a runner/walker from our state and do a Q&A blog with them. It may be a slow going process but at least now you know what has been keeping me so busy lately. Don’t give up on me! I’m getting there, one step at a time. 🙂

Philippians 4:6-7
Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.(NLT)

SPIbelt Review and Giveaway!!

SPIbelt Review

SPIbelt (Small Personal Item Belt) has given me the opportunity to do a review and giveaway for their awesome utility belts!

Here’s what their website says, “Sleek, expandable, secure and does not bounce. Can hold an iPod™, Blackberry™, cell, keys, up to five GU™ packs, and other small personal items. The SPIbelt does not bounce, ride or shift while running or doing other activities.”

At one point or another  as runners, walkers or even as tourists, we’ve had our hands full and with either no pocket or not enough pocketsWell, SPIbelt has a solution for that!!

I’ve been on way too many runs that have consisted of me running with not only my iPod in my hands but with my keys and Sport Beans! I purchased another utility belt that, while roomy and water-resistant, was really heavy and never fit me just right. In fact, it would bounce and move around my body and even would have to be pulled up to keep it from falling off completely. That’s not what I want to deal with when I’m out training for a half marathon or even out running 5 miles! We first purchased a SPIbelt at the Crescent City Classic Expo in April of this year. My husband actually tried it on race day and loved it. I had  After trying the SPIbelt out on a run one day, I was ready to switch. What a difference in the two!! I actually forgot that I was wearing it!

When you first look at the belt, it seems as though you’ll barely be able to fit your keys in there, much less a phone, Sport Beans or wallet. I was able to stuff my keys, my Samsung Galaxy phone (which may be smart but it isn’t small), $20 and 2 GU gels on the outside elastic loops, although it can fit up to 6 on the outside of the belt.

This is what I ran with the first time. (Minus the money which was only to check out the water resistance.)

Here's my phone, keys and gels

All zipped up and ready to run!

The SPIbelt is super lightweight, doesn’t bounce – not even when it’s loaded down! It fit securely around my waist but didn’t feel uncomfortable. Its stretchy fabric expands impressively to hold pretty much everything you might need to bring with you when you’re out for a run.

SPIbelt makes numerous versions: the basic belt, the inner pocket belt, a waterproof belt, a water resistant belt, the energy belt, a belt for diabetics that has room for an insulin pump and even belts for kids!  It is one size fits all so all you have to do is adjust the band to fit your body whether you want it around your hips or waist Although the SPIbelt we own is black, it isn’t the only color. They have a variety of colors to choose from, as seen in the picture.

Here’s what my husband has to say about his SPIbelt:

“Recently at the Crescent City Classic expo in New Orleans, I picked up a water-resistant SPIbelt. I was hoping to have a means to bring a little money and my pocket camera with me so that I could catch a few pics of the amazing crowd (22,000+ participants) and post race party. The SPIbelt was super slim and under $25.The belt that I purchased has several elastic loops for energy gels and has loops for attaching your racing number. The SPIbelt that I was looking at looked so small that I questioned whether it would be able to hold all that I needed it to. The company rep was confident and was able to pop my large Samsung Galaxy cell inside with ease. I was sold and so was another SPIbelt. I know it’s never a good idea to try something new on race day; but, I really wanted to bring my camera!!! I packed it, the room key, and some money inside of the super stretchy pouch with no trouble. The pouch conformed to the shape of its contents, keeping the size to a minimum. I was able to strap it around my waist, and with my shirt pulled over it, it was not really noticeable. The run that day was a nightmare with the heat and humidity, so I was definitely sweaty! After running through a few sprinklers and dumping a couple of cups of water on my head, my SPI-belt was definitely tested. It was comfortable to wear and I really had forgotten that I had it on while I was running. After crossing the finish line, I was able to remove my dry camera and had a few dollars to spend! Test passed! I have since used it on several runs with my cell phone in it, and remain very satisfied with my purchase.”

SPIbelts retail from $19.95-$29.95 and as you read, it can double as a belt for your racing number.
